Small booths and vendors line the sidewalk in front of the Basilica de la Soledad in Oaxaca, Mexico, selling a colorful array of religious folk charms. Here, worshippers can find little fabric heart milagros to offer to Our Lady of Guadalupe. Inspired by these hearts, we started dosa’s corazon milagro project with the help of Trine Ellitsgaard. This project is both a means of employment for local Oaxacan women and a creative way for us to repurpose the smallest of colorful scraps from dosa clothing production. Each heart is handmade, hand stitched, and hand beaded by a small group of women in the town of Ejutla de Crespo, just outside of Oaxaca. The single hearts come in a paper box hand made by artisans at Taller Arte Papel Oaxaca. Garlands of hearts, made by stringing several milagros together, are wrapped around handmade paper. Julia organizes and facilitates the making of our milagros. As of 2015, over 103,000 hearts have been individually made, all by hand, using more than 515 pounds of dosa scraps.
