Francisco Toledo (Mexico)

Painter, sculptor, photographer, and activist committed to preserving the social, cultural, and ecological legacy of his home state of Oaxaca. Together with his wife, artist Trine Ellitsgaard, he established numerous public access institutions to benefit the local community, including the Instituto de Artes Gráficas de Oaxaca; Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Oaxaca; Centro de las Artes de San Agustín; and El Taller Arte Papel. By inviting visiting international artists and friends to donate books to Oaxaca’s libraries, Francisco ensures that the local community has access to global knowledge. Christina considers Francisco her mentor; the two share a natural synergy in how they work with artisans, generously share knowledge, and encourage traditional craftsmanship as a source of identity and pride. We began working with Francisco and Trine in 2002, opening dosa to a new world of ideas and possibilities in Oaxaca. See also El Taller Arte Papel; Trine Ellitsgaard
